Valuable Internships

I am writing observations on my internship for an Oxfam staff based in Oxford and thought this web page could be of interest: What not Practice what we Preach?, http://www.bond.org.uk/networker/aug06/internships.htm. It is on unpaid internships with NGOs and mentions the medias as another sector where graduates are not on the same level playing field.

It is important not to forget that volunteering means different things according to the company, experience, working conditions... In my case, I was accommodated and got an allowance, per diems when I travelled and transport expenses reimbursed when on duty. It is crucial that interns get appropriate support, also mentally. Even more necessary, I imagine, when the internship takes place far from home.

Un goût amer de Ghana

Sous le coup de la colère, j'écris sur la mauvaise nouvelle que je viens d'apprendre en téléphonant au bureau d'Oxfam à Accra.

Le proprio a loué l'appart peu après mon départ et a emporté mes effets. C'est ce que mes collègues ont découvert en allant là-bas. Il paraît que comme j'avais remis les clés au gardien d'Oxfam - avec une liste de mes affaires et de leurs propriétés, le proprio a forcé la serrure. Malentendu ou perversité? Je constate que personne ne peut se mettre à l'abri d'un prédateur pareil.

Pour envenimer le tout, le téléphone portable qu'Oxfam m'a prêté et que j'ai remis dans sa boîte avant de la porter à l'homme d'entretien a été déclaré manquant. J'expérimente la cupidité et la malhonnêteté d'un coup!

Il ne me reste qu'à croire en la bonne parole et intervention d'une forte bonté australienne: la directrice du Programme d'Oxfam. J'ai défendu les Ghanéens contre tous les mépris dont ils sont sujets. Voilà que je suis la cible une seconde fois de leurs agissements. Au fond, j'ai rapidement perdu toute estime pour le proprio dégoûtant mais je dois garder confiance en l'humanité de certains hommes et femmes car sans cela je perds tout espoir de retrouver un jour mes affaires ou du moins de vouloir progresser dans un monde gangréné par l'égoïsme et l'avarice des êtres humains.

Bitter Ghana

Unwillingly, here is what happened in Ghana:

Soon after I left the landlord gave the flat - by breaking out into it was I told - to a lady, packing my things away. That's what my colleagues found out when they went there to collect Oxfam's properties and mine. In addition, the mobile phone was missing in the box I brought to the cleaner before going to the airport. My word against his. If I have a witness, he has got his family and colleagues' support. Fortunately, I hope, I can still rely on the Country Programme Manager to act. She is my last chance but I fear that (landlord) crook-thief-bastard has already sold all my clothes, books, etc. I'm disgusted. Roted Ghanaian? Desperately corrupted for sure!

En terminant l'actualisation de ce blog, je pense à vous tous qui m'avez aidée sur le Chemin. Mes pensées vont droit à vous, quelqu'ait été votre contribution, influence... Je pense aussi à ceux dont j'ai fait la connaissance par l'intermédaire du blog, également de leur blog. Mon intérêt va aussi à ceux et celles qui peut-être tomberont un jour par hasard sur un contenu que j'ai publié et prendront du plaisir à lire. Le champ est Infini.

Welcome 2007!

After reflection - knowing that updating a blog requires a lot of time when it becomes part of life -, I chose to finish it, whilst leaving it open to public. Today is the time.

It's a new year for us. I wish you all you desire. Most of all, LOVE. Love makes it so much easier to take chances that life offers us. It transforms existence into enjoyable progressions, full of interest and experience. It helps people to live in harmony with others in a quite unpredictable environment - natural and man-made. So let's welcome 2007 by appreciating what we can already appreciate, think longer when you desire something (consider the implications of your acts) and overall never be shy or afraid of LOVE (someone's or yours).

SHARE WITH THE MAXIMUM OF PEOPLE (anything, with anyone...)

Don't let others put you down. Think positive. There are many examples of Good (initiatives by people) - probably more than Bad. Little good is better than no good at all. And it makes a big difference.

Limits are everywhere: they are necessary. Quintessential is the fact that we are somehow free to act (otherwise, there would be no notion and question of limit). Seize opportunities to decide. Be brave. Something positive always goes out of decision followed by action.
